 '04 525i issues, please help!
Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, and was hoping someone could give me a hand. I just purchased a used 2004 525i with 42,000 miles. Its been giving me nothing but problems since. I took the car orignally to bmw of manhattan to get new tires/battery and get my car serviced. Everything went well there were no problems with the car. Later it started giving a me an "increased emissions!" message and I took it to bmw of manhattan again and the next day they told me it was because there was some damage done under the car (looked like the previous owner ran over something) and the Right Rear Wheel well was missing, the vent hose was cut from the canister. I had all the neccessary repairs done on my car , and supposedly the "Leak" error that it gave off, was fixed and no longer detected.
2 days later my check engine light is back "increased emissions" (Is that the standard error message for any issue with bmw?) i took it back to them again, and they said a hose was not conected properly...fine problem fixed. On my way home on friday I got an error "engine coolant low, top off coolant ASAP" I drove straight home and parked the car and I planned on putting in the antifreeze tomorrow when the car was cool. The next day I tried to put some in and it just ran out, I got a message then that the engine temp, was too hot. So i parked the car and I figured something was wrong with the radiator. I had to have my car towed to manhattan because It would overheat if I drove it. I was told that one of the bearings went bad and the water pump had to be fixed. ( I personally thought that someone forgot to connect back a hose before returing the car). My car was there for the week, I picked up my vehicle that friday and on my way home from manhattan they check engine light came back on. I called my service advisor, very upset, he told me to drive the car for the weekend and take it back in on monday and see what happens. I was also told that its possible that some of the coolant could have gotten into a sensor and damaged it. (Is that possible??) I thought that that was just an excuse, because they couldnt diagnose the problem.
I said ok, I went to put gas in the car, and after filling up my car wouldnt start!! It was like there was no gas getting to the engine, I had to press the gas pedal while turning the ignition. It finally started and I drove my car back home and parked it. Monday I took my car back to bmw and I was given a loaner they put it on a smoker and smoked the fuel system for a leak and found one along the gas cap area, they changed the gas cap, i didnt want to take the car back, (because I had a loaner) and because I knew the gas cap wouldnt be giving off a "major leak" error. I was sure the check engine light was going to come back on, so I told them to drive it over the weekend, I called my service advisor, the following monday and he told me the check engine like was back on again "increased emission!" with the same major leak error. Supposedly now they are replacing a "dcl pump" (I dont know if I have that right) it compresses the fuel system before the car starts, supposedly that was causing a fault.
I just dont know where to go from here, my knowledge about bmw mechanics is very limitied because it is so intricate. They seem just as dumbfounded about the car as I am. If anyone could give me a hand or point me in the right direction. One other thing, In Park the car should rev at about 1000 rpm, mine revs at about 600. I'm going to tell them to drive it over the weekend and again and let me know whats up. The service there has been very good. I have gotten a loaner vehicle everytime I had requested one. All of the work they have done on my car since has been "free" since they cant diagnose the problem, which is good for me, but I would rather just know what is going on.
