Post 2004 320i - Weird sound when driving

hi all,

I recently acquired a 320i car. When driving, i hear a thumping sound that i think comes from the wheel. When its moving and i dont press the accel, the sound is still there. Is this normal or is this due to a bad wheel? Speed does not matter, it is there.

One concern though is that when i turn the car to the right, it gives out a clunking sound. Any hint will be appreciated. The car is in warranty and i just want to see if anyone had this same problem.

I appreciate it, Thanks!

Jun

noises are difficult to troubleshoot. you need to have good senses and better understanding of how this parts work. i suggest bring the car and take advantage of the warranty. please let us update of the outcome. we'd love to add it on our archive for future reference. thank you and good luck.

You could try swapping the front wheels to the back and see whether you still get the noise.

I had a similar problem with a Golf I owned... was convinced there was a wheel bearing needing replacing... swapped the front wheels to the back and although the noise was less audible, it was still there... but it was now coming from the back.

It turned out to be a defective tyre, changed the whole lot as there was a real mix of tyres on the car generally... the noise disappeared instantly.

My first guess is the tires. However, I will bring it in since its in warranty. I will see what they say. Thanks for the post.

With the thumping i would think wheel and/or tyre.
The clunking sound can be the wheel bearing (to new of a car to go out in my opinion) or a bad CV axle due to a torn CV boot.
