Post 79 320i shuts off when headlights turned on 

My 79 320i will run and drive fine but sometimes even at driving speed, turn on the headlights or sometimes turn signal and the enigine shuts off and all gauges go dead. total loss of electrical power. Turn the key off, then back on it will start right up. anyone tell me what this could be?
