As for the bit about $300k income not being enough to shrug off a $40k price difference...well, of course not. That's a very awkward point on the income scale. You're well out of the middle class at that point, but nowhere near any reasonable definition of truly rich. It's like you've gone from being the upperclassman in elementary school to being the youngest, smallest, little shrimp in high school. At $300k, you're trying to reach that next level, not show off what you've got. With the number of American millionaires showing double digit growth in the 30 million plus bracket, anyone with $300k a year income is probably in the 2-5 million networth range and feels like he's just scraping by. Spending extravagantly would ensure that he is quickly left behind by his more frugal peers. But I think that's foolish.
