Post Burning Oil, was told rings are covered in old oil ????

Gentz,

Driving a 520i, well kept full service history bought from garage. Never driven the stones out of it. However i noticed that it was burning oil. in my previous job i did about 450-700 miles per week and i have beed told that a litre of oil a week for that milage is acceptable. I have it about a year and 3 months.

I now do alot less miles, i reking its goin through best part of litre of oil every 200 miles.

Last service i was told the rings (if i remember correctly) are caked in old oil and its causing the engive to burn the oil. I was told to fix this engine has to be stripped and could cost well over couple of grand.

I tried the treatment things but no use.

Anyone any ideas?? How much am i looking at whats my options ??

Cheers

Rings can get gunked up and stuck in the piston grooves. This prevents the rings from expanding fully up against the cylinder walls to provide a good seal for compression and oil swiping.

You should do a wet and dry compression test to confirm that's the problem, and be sure it's not something like a PCV valve of sludge in the engine preventing oil from draining down through the oil galleys.

A good rule of thumb on oil consumption is the engine should not normally burn more that 1 quart every 3,000 miles. Meaning you shouldn't have to add between oil changes.
