Post buying in germany, shipping to US?

hey i heard that it was possible to go to germany, buy a bmw made in germany, and they give you a visa to drive around for a month and then they ship it to the US for you, and it comes out cheaper than buying a bmw here. is this true? what are the logistics of doing this? i was just thinking about it, it would be really nice to do that. well, just curious really, it probably won't happen. i need the car soon-ish. thanks though, if anyone knows and can reply!

I remember this was done decades ago and seemed to be a good deal but the exchange rate between dollar and euro is a nightmare. You can order it here and make sure it is a US spec car -if not you will have to pay to make it US specced- and get some sort of discount-- mainly high import taxes.

Post Buying a Car in GE

I do not think that would be possible. German cars are made to German specifications, not US specification. Unless you can order directly from a German car dealer a US spec car. I spent 3 tours (9 years) in Germany, while in the US Army. Although there were dealers selling only to US forces personnel, only US personnel could order from these dealers, and only Germans could order from German dealers, as each individual car was ordered to the US or German specification. While ordering thru a German car dealer keep in mind that you are subject to the German tax (VAT), around 19%. When ordering thru the US (military) car dealer, you must be a member of the military or civilian work force associated with the military.

If I remember well the main and big difference between the two types of car specification were the environmental and crash standards that are required by the US that are not in Germany. In other words I do not think you can just go to Germany and pick any local BMW car and shipped to the US. Conversion (German-to-US standards) was an option available to the US military, but was an expensive conversion process, that was not recommended, back then. Unless the German car specification have or are similar than the US car specification, today, you are limited to a US made BMW car.
