Can someone please tell me the correct tire size to buy please

For 16" alloys

And

for 17" alloys

The wheels on car are 185/65/r15

BMW Compact e36(year 1998)

215/50r16  ---- Same Diameter

235/40r17  ---- Tiny bit bigger

What difference would it make if i put 215/40/r17 on the car?

And what are the offset for bmw wheels?

Wider tires equal more rubber on the road. More rubber equals better traction
