I have a 2005 BMW 33 ci Convertible.
The car cranks strong but doesn't start. It was fine when I parked it 24 hours earlier.
Spark -- YES
Fuel in rail  --  NO
ANy Codes --   NO
Fuel pump noise as key turned on -- YES
My next step is replacing fuel filter, any other ideas?

I think you need to get the car checked by a good mechanic.He'll be able to guide you properly.

Hanes repair manual was best $24 ever spent.

I pulled fuel pump out and connected to 12v away from car.  Nothing.
Tapped it with handle of pliers and it spun.

Put it back in car and it ran beautifully.  

Total cost $0

This weekend I will replace the fuel filter (5000 miles early).

I also intend to order a new fuel pump as I suspect if this has a dead spot it will give me more trouble.

For those unfamiliar, the fuel pump at a store such as NAPA is $300.  It is a complete setup including sending unit etc.  You can also just buy the pump which easily installs on this sender.  The pump is closer to $100.

I'll go online and buy the pump at the best price and put it in soon.  The whole job if you Don't know what you're doing is 1 hour, doesn't require fancy tools and can be done on the side of the road if necessary.

The so called "Good Mechanic" would have hit me for between $1200 - $1300 for this problem.
