Post damage from broken intake butterfly on 525D

Hi I have a BMW 525D late 2003 E39 I have been told that a broken inlet butterfly has gone into a valve and is causing the trouble that I thought was the result of washed diesel. I have also been told that these butterfly"s can be done without alltogether without effecting the cars performance. I am wondering if anybody knows if this is true. The head is going to be taken off to asess damage and the the other 5 butterfly"s will be removed to prevent this happening again.
I would be greatfull for any advice about this as it is a worry.
                                                Thanks R.
