Engine running very hot.

Post Engine running very hot.

Hi. I have just bought a second hand BMW 3 series and I have noticed my engine gets very hot. Even after short journeys I can hear the engine "ticking" as it cools when I leave the car. If I open the bonnet I can feel a great deal of heat and there is also a burning smell. There is no light coming on to say the engine has overheated though.

Is this something to worry about or are these engines supposed to run very hot? I find it quite unsettling, particularly with no temperatue gauge.

I am driving a 2006 E90 320i.

Many thanks,
Tom.
