For the pas two months and a half, a strange metallic pingin (knocking) happens when I change gears. When I go to first, then second then douwnshift to first, then from first to reverse and reverse to first, basically at low speeds and at low RPM, not above 3500 rpm. The sounds comes from the back around the differential area. Can someone help me with this problem?

i had this issue before and it's the drive shaft or the viscous coupling /rubber in between front and rear drive shaft causing it. i suggest have it checked by a seasoned bmw mechanic. i'm sure they have experienced a lot of these cases before.

Do the 2007's have a Viscous coupler? I know my 86 E30 does. This car is under warranty. I would recommend taking it to a dealership. This car is too new to have that kind of problem. Do you drive the car hard? Popping gears and such?

I went to the bmw dealer and the service manager heard the noise and new what it what it was with the first sound. It's the drive shatft in the rear where the cross is. He tells me that there is play there, which should not be. He will fix it. And, NO I don't drive hard. I have downshifted a bit hard but not very hard. I NEVER popped the clutch!  It is a BMW after all. It's not a Korean car. I think I got a lemon!!!!

Sad to hear. Lemons are no fun.
