 My dear divorced uncle!
Hello out here in the ethersphere.
I just bought a 1993 525i. It only cost me a buck. Got it from my uncle, who just got divorced, and the car reminded him of her so I struck a deal. Only a 100k on the odometer. The more I drive it...excuse me, the more I look at it (and drive it), the more I am impressed by the classic look. It's almost 20 years old after all! Very fun to drive, and for a buck, it's very very very fun to drive.
OK, so why did BMW put black and red colored cables to the battery...in reverse application? I ask because I just hooked them up wrong. I saw the sparking, which should have clued me in, but my Dad is the car guy. I'm a car idiot. The mismatched cables were attached for about 10 seconds...not tightened down though, because even my car idiot brain finally said: "Hey, the persistent sparking must be bad". After hooking the cables up correctly, I was grateful the car started, and everything seemed fine. I called my dad and he came over with his volt meter, convinced I had at least fried the diodes in the alternator. But NO!! The alternator is apparently working fine. Right when I thought I had dodged every bullet, I discovered that all my windows refused to respond, as well as my sunroof. We checked the fuse, but it's fine. So how can this be a coincidence? Any ideas out there? Everything runs and works fine except the windows and sunroof. And again, the fuse is undamaged.
My uncle has another car from his wife that he for some reason seems able to tolerate. It too is a BMW, but a much newer one. Probably why he can live with it. I don't think I will ever get it for a buck, but maybe 20 bucks? I'll keep you posted. If you have an idea with problem, who to ask, how to get it diagnosed, etc, please let me know.
Thanks. Jaz
