I have a 1992 525i. c. 133k miles. Had it maybe 5 years with almost no problems. About a month ago I got a readout: "transmission program". The car put itself car 3rd gear, in a self protective mode. Won't shift. Two competent mechanics found nothing mechancally wrong with the transmission. On advice, I installed a new used trany brain. No help. In desperation, I took it to the local dealer who told me today that they couldn't find the trouble and all they could do would be to put in a new transmission for $5000. So I am facing the prospect of throwing away a car that runs really well except for some myserious electronic fluke.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? Any ideas? Failing that any idea who would buy it for parts within a reasonable distance of Nashville, TN?

i think there's someone that do the transmission overhauling for BMW's in your area... in the philippines and china... a lot.

by the way, what fault code did the dealership found when they hook the scanner?

hi i have a e34 2,0l sei with the same problem it keeps going into a fault mode when warm and stays in 3rd.  did you find out what the problem was in the end?

This happened to my 01 A4. The alternator was going out and so the tranny locked itself in 3rd. Check the alternator.
