Post No power after trying to crank...

Well, today I was working on m y recently purchased E30 325IS project car, and I went to crank the engine, I heard the starter TRY to engage, then all power went OUT, and so I turned off the key.  I went to turn the key back on, and NO power.  What do?  What can cause this?

Agreed BMWbro.  One other question.  being a newbie at BMW stuff, what is that little wire coming off of the ignition wire for I think number 6?  I dont know what it does, but I know where it connects to.  Id like to know what it does, so I can understand why its there.
