Post Overheating problems

Hi folks. I have a problem with my 1992 730iSE. A few days ago it overheated. I let it cool down and then topped up with water again, after which there was no problem for a few days. The problem occurred again, so I did the same thing, which seemed to do the trick. Today it happened again and I noticed there was water coming from the radiator, but along with the overheating there was white smoke coming out of the exhaust and seemingly a loss of power, although I drove it only around 1-2 miles when this started happening. Is this likely to be a head gasket problem, or something else? If it is the head gasket, what sort of bill should I prepare myself for?? Thanks in advance...
