Post Rough Idle BMW 2000, 323i

BMW -usually no problems.  This past week the engine icon appeared on the instrument panel.  Parked the car in the garage, next restart, ran fine, no light.  A couple days later, the engine icon, the traction control icon, and the EML icon all appeared, the car started running rough, no pickup at floored pedal.  Got home, had it towed to the BMW dealer.  Next morning, the service advisor called, all of the noted icons were identified on the computer fault code reading.  Mechanic reset the codes, told me the car ran fine, took it for a  drive, no problems.  Suggested a fuel system clean.  $350 dollars later (tow and fuel system clean) I picked my car up, drove it home, about 30 miles.  Ran great, that was Friday.  We went to the movies on Saturday, dinner, drove around about 30 minutes, no problems.  Heading home, the traction control, EML, and engine icon all reappeared as well as the rough running engine, what my dad used to call skipping.  Parked the car, this morning headed back to the dealer.  Car would accelerated, but at about 40mph, seemed to not want to do more.  Low power up minor upgrades, sputtered all the way to the dealer.

Any ideas as to what the problems might be?  This is a first.  The car has been  very dependable.  110K, regular maintenance.
