 Stereo Randomly Shuts Off
Hello everyone. I own a 525i and absolutely love the car, but I get really irritated when the stereo randomly shuts off. I thought this problem was connected to another problem I had before where it kept saying the Trunk lid was open when it wasn't. I got that problem fixed and realized those two were independent problems. Besides the fact that it randomly shuts off it won't turn off when I turn the car off. I have to manually turn off the stereo and turn it back on myself, every time. I never thought this problem would be so annoying! Someone help me!

The power to the stereo turns off. I'll be driving listening to a great tune and silence, the power to the stereo turned off. I usually press the power button on again and continue listening till I turn off the car. Then when I turn the car off the displays on the stereo disappear like they should but the music is still there! So I have to manually turn the power off on the stereo. The reason this problem worries me is because if one day I lower the volume on the stereo and forget to turn off the stereo when I leave the car the battery might drain when I get back. What a disaster! :-/

i believe there are two problems with the head unit. first, the radio turns off while driving could be a loose connections specifically on the voltage source connections. by the way, when you turn the radio on is it on the factory default settings? there are other reasons too that could cause this problem like some of the control units on your car automatically shuts down when it reached a certain temperature threshold to prevent it from overheating. can you give me the year so i could check what kind of system do you have?
second, the radio wont turn off even the engine is out is something else too and i haven't experienced this one yet. could be a defective head unit or other things too. again, need to know more information in order to diagnose it.

It's a 2001 or 2002 525i. The head unit has a single CD input called a Business Stereo or something, and a missing cd-changer from the trunk which I replaced with an iLink for ipods. The problem was there before I connected the iLink so it can't be from that.

I'll probably have an electrician take a look at it and maybe he or she can diagnose it. I would hate to replace it

I have the same problem while my car is 530i (E39) 2003 model, however, I sent to the agent for service but they couldn't identify the real problem but suggested to replace the whole on board monitor with the inhouse unit on my account. of-course, I didn't. I hope you or someone can help in this regard

did the dealership isolate the problem? they should however be sure enough if it's really the head unit causing the problem. best thing to do with it is try to swap the head unit with the same as yours.
you can also try to check the power source connections if it's loosing.
do you feel that the head unit turns off when it gets too hot? if this is the case, the head unit needs to be replaced or the dealership can try to update the software- the cheaper one's.
good luck.

Thanks for your feedback. I don't believe the dealer even try to isolate the problem, its much easier for the dealer to recommend changing the whole set. The swap idea is great and hope it works out. Its not a heat problem because it happen at all the times even after two or three minutes from starting up the engine at early mornings when the car and weather are cool.

I'm having exactly the same problem with my 530I 2002 model and believe the problem is related to a standard internal fitted cradle phone,
