correct me if i'm wrong, but the lower radiator hose connects to the water pump i believe and your thermostat is connected to the upper hose. then, the water pump pushes the hot coolant out of the water jackets and through the radiator. if this is the case, the coolant flow must have been blocked by some foreign objects or the hose itself is defective(collapsed). it could also be the water pump. a quick check is to remove the drive belt and move the bearing in and out. any movement or a rough grinding feeling as the bearing is turned, indicates a defective water pump. one cause of a water-pump bearing failure is an overtight drive belt. bearing failure usually makes the pump noisy.
are there any visible leaks from the water pump?
also, the thermostat could cause this too if it is stuck closed thus not allowing coolant circulation.
by the way, when did you last bleed the cooling system of your car??? every after 2 years coolant must be renewed.
