Hi, I have been in the market for and x5 for a while now. I found one I like and the price is right but some of the digital ododmeter and the dash computer leds are out. The salesman told me to contact a local spedometer shop who told me it would have to be replaced at the dealer. the dealer said the whole computer would have to be replaced for about $1k parts and labor or $660 just for the parts. Anyone have any feedback or advice, I would like to buy this car but the dash isuues is kinodf a deal breaker unless I get a better plan.

Hi, The problem with this dash is that it is likely someone has attempted to tamper with mileage on the instrument cluster and corrupted it. The cluster has a tamper proof chip which requires removal and change of chip.  The faults you describe are classic signs of chip corruption.  The dash could also have received an electrical spike but more likely it is a mileage tamper.  I would leave this car well alone as you would be buying a heap of trouble.
